Prokofiev: Piano Sonatas, Vol. III
For this third volume devoted to the complete piano sonatas of Sergei Prokofiev, David Jalbert brings together three major works: Sonatas No. 8 and No. 9, along with the Sarcasms, Op. 17. Sonata No. 8, the last of the cycle of “War Sonatas,” alternates between introspective lyricism, dramatic outbursts, and virtuosity, reflecting the tension between dream and menace characteristic of its time of creation. More intimate, Sonata No. 9, dedicated to Sviatoslav Richter, reveals a refined expression. As for the Sarcasms, written in the vigor of youth, they unfold with audacious spirit, sudden contrasts, and biting irony.
With this program, David Jalbert explores the full richness of Prokofiev’s pianistic universe: enigmatic poetry, striking rhythms, and a keen sense of theatre. This recording offers a precise, imaginative, and profoundly human reading of these works.
